With a fun blend of mystery and romance, I Did Something Bad grabs the reader from the beginning and holds on through a rollercoaster of lies, deception, and love. This book was a balance of fun and flirty and a serious read that really focused on the reality of keeping safe in a world designed to tear women down with threats of violence, racism, and how far a person will go to protect someone they just met, simply because it is the right thing to do.
The balance between such serious topics and a flirty romance is very difficult, but this book manages to keep track of each plot line with respect to the topic. The main characters, Khin and Tyler, have so much chemistry, that the romance aspect flowed seamlessly. Coupled with the time and effort that the more serious topics needed, the story was able to breathe when needed.
My problem with the story was simply that, while the characters had great chemistry together, I didn’t enjoy them apart. Despite the serious topics being handled so well, Khin and Tyler felt flat when they were going about their normal lives. It helped that they had some great supporting characters, but not enough for me to feel connected to either Khin or Tyler.
Overall, this book is worth a read for anyone in the mood for a romantic adventure, but it unfortunately is not an essential read.
